Duplex Stainless Steel Reducing Elbow

Duplex Stainless Steel Reducing Elbow

The Duplex Stainless Steel Reducing Elbow is a butt-weld pipe fitting used to change piping direction while connecting two different nominal pipe sizes. Its reducing geometry combines a directional change with a size transition in one fitting, helping maintain a compact piping arrangement. Duplex 2205 grades are commonly identified as UNS S31803, UNS S32205, and EN 1.4462. The duplex structure provides a combination of mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, including resistance to localized corrosion and chloride-related stress corrosion cracking. Material grade, dimensions, wall thickness, elbow angle, and applicable standards are specified according to the piping requirement.

Material & Grade

Duplex 2205
UNS S31803 and UNS S32205 are commonly used designations for duplex 2205. EN 1.4462 is the corresponding European material designation. Typical 2205 chemistry includes approximately 22% chromium, 5% nickel, 3% molybdenum, and 0.15–0.20% nitrogen, subject to the applicable material specification.

Super Duplex
UNS S32750 is a super duplex grade used where the specified service conditions call for higher alloy content and corrosion resistance than standard duplex 2205.

Material Records
Heat number and material grade identification should correspond with the material certificate and purchase specification. This provides a clear link between the fitting and its material documentation.

Product Features

Integrated Reduction
Different nominal sizes are formed into one elbow, combining pipe-size reduction and directional change without adding a separate reducer and elbow.

Butt-Weld Connection
Beveled ends provide a direct welded connection to the adjoining pipe. End preparation is controlled according to the specified dimensional and welding requirements.

Duplex Material
The duplex structure combines ferritic and austenitic phases. Duplex 2205 is recognized for high mechanical strength together with resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride-related stress corrosion cracking.

Defined Geometry
45° and 90° configurations are commonly specified. The required angle, end sizes, radius, and center-to-end dimensions should be stated in the purchase specification.

Manufacturing Process

Material Preparation
Incoming material is identified by grade and heat number before forming. The material designation is matched with the required fitting specification.

Forming
The fitting blank is formed into the required elbow angle, radius, and reducing profile. Process conditions are controlled according to the selected duplex grade.

Sizing
After forming, the fitting is sized to achieve the specified large-end diameter, small-end diameter, wall thickness, center-to-end dimensions, and angular alignment.

End Preparation
The weld ends are prepared to the required bevel geometry. The finished ends are checked for dimensional accuracy and suitable welding condition.

Quality & Traceability

Dimensional Inspection
Inspection covers end diameter, wall thickness, center-to-end dimensions, angle, ovality, and bevel geometry.

Material Verification
The material grade and heat number are checked against the applicable material documentation. PMI can be included when required by the purchase specification.

Visual Inspection
The fitting surface, weld ends, and formed areas are visually examined for surface condition, dimensional conformity, and visible forming irregularities.

Traceability
Heat-number identification can be maintained from material receipt through production, inspection, packing, and shipment documentation.

Application Areas

Chemical Processing
Used in process piping where duplex stainless steel is specified for mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.

Oil & Gas
Applied to specified process, transfer, and utility piping systems using duplex stainless steel materials.

Marine Systems
Suitable for piping systems exposed to saline or chloride-containing service where the selected duplex grade meets the operating requirements.

Water Treatment
Used in selected desalination and industrial water applications requiring duplex stainless steel construction.

Selection Guide

Confirm Pipe Sizes
Specify both the larger and smaller nominal pipe sizes. These two dimensions determine the reducing configuration.

Match Wall Thickness
State the required schedule or actual wall thickness. The fitting specification should correspond with the connected piping design.

Select Material Grade
Identify the exact grade, such as UNS S31803/S32205 for duplex 2205 or UNS S32750 for super duplex service.

Specify Elbow Angle
Confirm whether the piping layout requires a 45° or 90° reducing elbow. The angle affects the fitting geometry and center-to-end dimensions.

Define Standards
List the required material standard and dimensional standard separately so that material documentation and fitting dimensions can be reviewed against the correct requirements.

Inspection & Documentation

Material Certificate
Documentation can include material grade, heat number, chemical composition, and mechanical test results according to the applicable specification.

Dimensional Report
Recorded dimensions can cover outside diameter, wall thickness, center-to-end dimensions, angle, and weld-end preparation.

Inspection Records
Visual, dimensional, material identification, and specified non-destructive examination records can be included according to the inspection plan.

Packing Identification
Fitting identification can be linked to size, material grade, heat number, quantity, and packing records for order-level traceability.
