904L stainless steel is identified by UNS N08904 and W.Nr. 1.4539. The alloy contains chromium, nickel, molybdenum and copper and is specified for process systems requiring the characteristics of this stainless steel grade. The fitting can be specified by end sizes, wall thickness, elbow angle, dimensional standard and weld-end preparation.

Key Features

Different End Sizes
The two ends are manufactured for different pipe diameters, allowing a size transition without a separate reducer and elbow arrangement.

904L Material
The fitting uses the specified 904L grade, with material identification linked to the applicable heat or lot documentation.

Butt-Weld Ends
Weld ends are prepared for direct connection to compatible pipe. Bevel dimensions can follow the applicable welding specification.

Controlled Geometry
The reducing profile, outlet alignment, wall thickness and center-to-end dimensions are checked against the specified requirements.

Material Selection

904L Stainless Steel
904L is an austenitic stainless steel containing chromium, nickel, molybdenum and copper. Its material chemistry makes it suitable for specified process environments where this grade is selected for corrosion service.

Grade Identification
The material can be identified as 904L, UNS N08904 or W.Nr. 1.4539. The fitting material grade should correspond with the project material schedule.

Heat Identification
Heat numbers can be retained through material documentation and inspection records, allowing the finished fitting to be linked with its material certificate.

Dimensional Configuration

Size Combination
The large and small ends are specified separately. A configuration such as 4 × 3 in identifies a 4-inch large end and a 3-inch small end.

Elbow Angle
45° and 90° are common configurations for directional changes. Other angles can be produced when defined by the approved drawing.

Wall Thickness
Wall thickness is specified by schedule or measured thickness according to the piping requirement. The selected fitting should correspond with the connected pipe and design specification.

Manufacturing & Inspection

Fitting Forming
The fitting body is formed to achieve the required reducing profile, outlet alignment and elbow geometry. Forming control helps maintain dimensional consistency through the fitting.

Weld-End Preparation
End bevels are prepared according to the specified welding requirement. Outside diameter, end condition and bevel geometry are checked before release.

Dimensional Inspection
Inspection can include end diameter, wall thickness, center-to-end dimension, angular alignment and overall fitting geometry.

Material Verification
PMI can be performed when positive material identification is included in the inspection requirement. Results can be recorded with the applicable heat or lot information.

Application Areas

Chemical Processing
Used in specified chemical process piping where 904L stainless steel is included in the material specification.

Acid Process Lines
Applicable to selected process systems handling aggressive acidic media when the engineering specification calls for 904L.

Pharmaceutical Processing
Used in selected process piping where controlled stainless steel material, dimensional accuracy and specified surface condition are required.

Marine Process Systems
Applicable to selected marine and industrial process piping where 904L is specified for the service environment.

Selection Checklist

Material
Confirm 904L / UNS N08904 / W.Nr. 1.4539 and the required fitting material specification.

Pipe Sizes
Provide both end sizes, such as 4 × 3 in, together with the required elbow angle.

Wall Thickness
Specify the schedule or exact wall thickness for each connected pipe system.

Standards
Confirm the applicable dimensional and weld-end standards, such as ASME B16.9 and ASME B16.25.

Inspection
Define PMI, dimensional inspection, NDT, pressure testing or other specified inspection requirements before production.

Documents
Specify MTC, inspection reports, heat traceability records and any additional quality documents required for the order.

Quality & Documentation

Material Certificate
Material certificates can identify the 904L grade, heat number and applicable chemical and mechanical properties.

Dimensional Report
Measured dimensions can be recorded against the approved drawing or specified dimensional requirements.

Inspection Records
Inspection records can document material verification, dimensional checks and specified testing results.

Traceability
Heat or lot information can be maintained through production and final inspection, providing a clear connection between the fitting and its material documentation.
