The Stainless Steel 180-Degree Return Bend for Heat Exchangers is a butt-weld fitting used to reverse a pipe or tube run through 180°. The two welding ends face the same general direction, forming a compact connection between parallel flow paths.
Common grades include 304, 304L, 316, 316L and 321 stainless steel. Size, wall thickness, return radius, end preparation and overall dimensions can be specified according to the piping requirement or approved drawing.
Product Features
180° Return Geometry
The fitting forms a continuous 180° return between parallel runs. Center-to-center and back-to-face dimensions are controlled for installation planning.
Butt-Weld Ends
The ends are prepared for direct welding to compatible pipe or tube. Bevel dimensions are matched to the specified wall thickness and joining requirements.
Stainless Steel Construction
304 and 304L cover general stainless steel service. 316 and 316L are selected for applications requiring higher corrosion resistance. 321 is available for specified elevated-temperature service.
Controlled Forming
Forming maintains the specified outside diameter, return radius and dimensional profile while limiting deformation of the fitting wall.

Material Selection
304 / 304L
304 is suited to general stainless steel piping. 304L provides a lower-carbon grade for welded assemblies where carbon control is specified.
316 / 316L
The molybdenum-bearing 316 grades are commonly selected for process conditions involving chloride exposure or increased corrosion requirements.
321
321 is a titanium-stabilized stainless steel option for specified elevated-temperature applications.
Other Grades
904L and selected duplex grades can be specified when the process medium, corrosion conditions or mechanical requirements call for a different alloy.
Heat Exchanger Applications
Shell-and-Tube Assemblies
The 180° configuration connects parallel pipe or tube runs where a defined return path is required.
Circulation Lines
The fitting provides a compact flow reversal in process and circulation piping.
Compact Piping Layouts
Both welding ends face the same general direction, reducing the space required for a return section.
Fabricated Connections
Dimensions can be coordinated with adjoining pipe, tube and welded components to maintain the required assembly geometry.
Manufacturing Process
Material Preparation
Material grade and heat information are identified before forming. Records are maintained according to the specified documentation requirements.
Forming
The fitting is formed to the required 180° profile while controlling diameter, radius and wall condition.
End Preparation
Welding ends are cut and beveled to the required configuration for connection with the mating pipe or tube.
Heat Treatment
Heat treatment is performed according to the applicable material specification and specified fitting requirements. ASTM A403/A403M includes heat-treatment requirements for covered wrought austenitic stainless steel fittings.
Surface Finishing
Pickling, polishing or another specified finish can be applied according to service and surface requirements.
Inspection & Documentation
Material Verification
Material grade and heat number are checked against the specified material documentation.
Dimensional Inspection
Outside diameter, wall thickness, bend angle, center-to-center dimension, back-to-face dimension and end preparation are measured against the applicable requirements.
Surface Inspection
The fitting surface and welding ends are visually checked for surface discontinuities and relevant mechanical marks.
Quality Records
Material certificates, dimensional inspection records and agreed inspection documents can be provided with the completed fitting. ASTM A403/A403M also addresses chemical analysis, tensile properties and visual examination.
Selection Guide
Match the Material
Select the grade according to process medium, temperature, chloride exposure and corrosion conditions.
Match the Size
Confirm NPS or outside diameter, wall thickness and pipe schedule before specifying the fitting.
Match the Return Dimensions
Check center-to-center, back-to-face and return radius against the available installation space.
Match the Standard
State the required dimensional and material standards together. ASME B16.9 addresses factory-made wrought butt-welding fitting dimensions, while ASTM A403/A403M covers wrought austenitic stainless steel fittings for pressure piping applications.
Why Specify This Return Bend
Compact Connection
The 180° configuration provides a direct return between parallel runs within a defined piping space.
Welded Integration
Butt-weld ends allow direct integration with compatible stainless steel pipe or tube.
Dimensional Consistency
Controlled forming and end preparation support accurate fit-up during fabrication.
Traceable Documentation
Material identification and inspection records provide the technical information required for specification review and project documentation.
