The 904L Stainless Steel 180-Degree Return Bend is a butt-weld fitting used to reverse a piping run through 180°. Both welding ends face the same general direction, allowing parallel pipe sections to be connected in a compact return layout.
904L stainless steel is designated UNS N08904 and EN 1.4539. Its high nickel, chromium and molybdenum content supports corrosion resistance in demanding process environments. The grade is specified for selected chemical processing, sulfuric acid, heat exchanger, water-treatment and process equipment applications.
The fitting can be specified in long-radius or short-radius configurations with controlled dimensions, wall thickness, end preparation and inspection requirements.
Product Features
180° Return Geometry
The fitting creates a 180° change in piping direction while maintaining two connection ends on the same side of the return.
904L Material
904L contains approximately 19–23% chromium, 23–28% nickel, 4–5% molybdenum and 1–2% copper under ASTM A403 WP904L chemistry requirements. The composition supports service in corrosive process environments.
Butt-Weld Ends
The welding ends are prepared for direct connection to compatible pipe, with bevel dimensions controlled to the specified piping requirement.
Radius Selection
Long-radius and short-radius configurations provide different installation geometries. The selected radius should match the available space and piping design.

Material Selection
High-Alloy Austenitic Grade
904L is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel with elevated nickel and molybdenum levels. The material is selected when the piping specification calls for enhanced corrosion resistance.
Acid Process Service
The grade is associated with sulfuric acid service. Concentration, temperature, contaminants and operating conditions should be reviewed before final material selection.
Material Identification
The purchase specification should state 904L together with UNS N08904, EN 1.4539 or the required material standard. Heat identification can be maintained for traceability.
Manufacturing & Inspection
Forming
The return section is formed to the required 180° profile. Center-to-center and back-to-face dimensions are controlled against the applicable dimensional requirement.
End Preparation
Welding ends are machined to the specified bevel geometry. End alignment and surface condition are checked before final inspection.
Dimensional Inspection
Inspection can cover outside diameter, wall thickness, center-to-center dimension, back-to-face dimension, end alignment and overall profile.
Material Verification
The supplied material is checked against the specified grade and applicable material documentation. Heat identification can be recorded with the finished fitting.
NDE
Additional nondestructive examination can be included when required by the project inspection plan or purchase specification.
Typical Applications
Chemical Processing
Used in selected process piping where 904L is specified for corrosive chemical service.
Sulfuric Acid Systems
Applied to piping and process equipment handling defined sulfuric acid conditions where 904L is selected.
Heat Exchangers
The 180° geometry provides a compact return path around heat-transfer equipment and connected piping.
Water Treatment
Used in selected desalination and water-treatment systems where the specified material grade requires 904L.
Process Equipment
Suitable for specified connections around vessels, tanks and process equipment requiring welded corrosion-resistant piping.
