904L Stainless Steel 5D Elbow

904L Stainless Steel 5D Elbow

The 904L Stainless Steel 5D Elbow is a butt-weld pipe fitting for long-radius direction changes in process piping. Its centerline radius is approximately 5 times the pipe outside diameter, giving the fitting a longer transition than 1.5D and 3D elbows. 904L stainless steel is identified as UNS N08904 and EN 1.4539. Its high chromium, nickel and molybdenum content, together with copper addition, provides corrosion-resistant performance for selected chemical process, acid, desalination, seawater and heat-exchanger applications.

Key Features

5D Radius
The centerline radius is approximately 5D. A 114.3 mm outside diameter gives a nominal radius of approximately 571.5 mm.

904L Material
The grade provides a defined material reference for drawings, material certificates and inspection records.

Butt-Weld Ends
Butt-weld ends provide a direct welded connection to matching pipe. End preparation follows the specified pipe wall and welding configuration.

Dimensional Control
Outside diameter, wall thickness, bend angle, radius and end dimensions are checked against the approved dimensional specification.

Material Selection

Chromium and Nickel
904L contains approximately 19.0–21.0% chromium and 24.0–26.0% nickel under the EN 1.4539 composition range. These elements contribute to corrosion resistance and austenitic structure.

Molybdenum and Copper
Molybdenum is specified at approximately 4.0–5.0%, while copper is approximately 1.2–2.0%. The combination supports service in selected acidic and chloride-containing environments.

Low Carbon
The carbon limit is approximately 0.02% maximum, supporting welded fabrication when the specified welding procedure and material requirements are followed.

5D Elbow Selection

Radius Calculation
The nominal centerline radius is calculated from the pipe outside diameter. For 60.3 mm OD, the 5D radius is approximately 301.5 mm. For 114.3 mm OD, it is approximately 571.5 mm.

Layout Clearance
The larger radius increases the centerline footprint compared with shorter-radius elbows. Piping drawings should therefore be checked for available installation space.

Bend Angle
45° and 90° cover common directional changes. Other angles can follow the required piping geometry.

Typical Applications

Chemical Processing
Used in process piping and equipment connections where 904L material is specified for the operating medium.

Acid Process Lines
The alloy is used in selected sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid environments where its corrosion resistance matches the process conditions.

Desalination Systems
Applications include selected desalination and seawater systems where material selection accounts for chloride concentration, temperature and process conditions.

Heat Exchangers
The 5D geometry can be used around heat-exchanger connections where a longer directional transition is required by the piping layout.

Manufacturing & Inspection

Forming Control
The elbow is formed to the specified bend angle and 5D centerline geometry. The finished radius is checked against the required dimensional value.

Wall Thickness
Wall thickness is measured at defined inspection locations. The nominal value follows the specified schedule, pipe wall or drawing requirement.

Weld Ends
Outside diameter, end preparation and end alignment are checked against the connection specification before release.

Dimensional Inspection
Inspection can cover outside diameter, wall thickness, centerline radius, bend angle, tangent length and ovality where specified.

Surface & Documentation

Surface Condition
Surface requirements may include mill finish, pickled condition or another finish stated in the project specification.

Material Traceability
Heat identification can be linked to material documentation and production records where traceability is required.

Inspection Records
The documentation package can include material certificates, dimensional inspection records, visual inspection results and specified test reports.

FAQ

Q: What does 5D mean for this elbow?

A: 5D means the centerline radius is approximately five times the connected pipe outside diameter. For a 114.3 mm OD pipe, the nominal radius is approximately 571.5 mm.

Q: What material designations identify 904L?

A: 904L stainless steel is identified as UNS N08904 and EN 1.4539.

Q: Which bend angles are available?

A: 45° and 90° are common configurations. Other angles can be specified according to the required piping geometry.

Q: How does a 5D elbow differ from a 1.5D elbow?

A: A 5D elbow has a substantially larger centerline radius, creating a longer directional transition and requiring more layout space.

Q: What dimensions should be confirmed before production?

A: The key dimensions are outside diameter, wall thickness, bend angle, centerline radius, tangent length and weld-end preparation.

Q: What information should be included in an inquiry?

A: Provide the material designation, pipe outside diameter, wall thickness or schedule, bend angle, 5D radius, dimensional specification, end preparation and required inspection documentation.
