The Large Diameter Stainless Steel 90-Degree Mitered Elbow is a fabricated butt-weld fitting for changing the direction of a large-diameter pipe run by 90°. It is assembled from stainless steel sections cut at controlled miter angles, fitted to the required centerline geometry, and welded into one elbow.
The construction supports large diameters, selected bend radii, and drawing-specific dimensions. Material grade, wall thickness, segment arrangement, end preparation, and overall dimensions are specified according to the piping design or fabrication drawing.
Key Features
Large-Diameter Fabrication
Segmented construction supports outside diameters beyond the practical range of many formed fitting configurations. Diameter and wall thickness are established from the connected pipe and design specification.
Controlled Geometry
Miter angles, centerline radius, end alignment, and overall dimensions are controlled during cutting and fit-up to maintain the required 90° direction change.
Drawing-Based Dimensions
Face-to-face length, tangent length, radius, wall thickness, end preparation, and segment quantity can be defined from project drawings.
Material Options
304 / 304L
304 stainless steel is used for general corrosion-resistant piping. 304L has a maximum carbon content of 0.030% and is commonly selected for welded stainless steel construction.
316 / 316L
316 and 316L contain molybdenum and are commonly specified for applications requiring increased resistance to chloride-containing environments and selected chemical media.
Duplex 2205
Duplex 2205 combines austenitic and ferritic microstructures and provides higher strength than common austenitic grades. Material selection depends on the service environment and applicable specification.

Dimensions & Configuration
Outside Diameter
The fitting diameter should match the connected pipe. A typical fabrication range is 219–1420 mm outside diameter, subject to material grade, wall thickness, radius, and production requirements.
Wall Thickness
Typical wall thickness ranges from 3–30 mm. The specified thickness should correspond to the connected pipe, design conditions, corrosion allowance, and applicable material requirement.
Centerline Radius
A typical centerline radius is 1.0D–3.0D. The selected radius determines the elbow footprint and centerline position, so it should be confirmed before fabrication.
Segment Arrangement
The number and geometry of miter sections are established from diameter, radius, angle, wall thickness, and fabrication requirements. Each joint is positioned to maintain the specified elbow profile.
Fabrication Process
Cutting
Stainless steel sections are cut to the specified miter angle and dimensions. Cutting accuracy establishes the geometry of each subsequent fit-up joint.
Fit-Up
Sections are aligned using the fabrication drawing as the dimensional reference. Centerline, circumference, root opening, joint alignment, and angular position are checked before welding.
Welding
Miter joints are welded according to the specified welding procedure. Joint preparation, welding sequence, and acceptance criteria follow the applicable project requirements.
Finishing
After welding, the elbow can be pickled, blasted, or given another specified surface finish. Weld areas and finished surfaces are checked before final dimensional inspection.
Quality Control
Dimensional Inspection
Inspection covers outside diameter, wall thickness, bend angle, centerline radius, overall length, end alignment, and roundness.
Weld Inspection
Completed welds receive visual examination. Radiographic, ultrasonic, liquid penetrant, or other non-destructive examination can be specified according to the project requirement and weld category.
Material Traceability
Heat numbers and material records can be maintained through fabrication. Material certificates can accompany the finished fitting when required.
Standards & Documentation
Applicable Requirements
The applicable dimensional, material, welding, and inspection requirements should be identified in the project specification. ASME B16.9 covers factory-made wrought butt-welding fittings and includes specified dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing, and marking requirements; its scope should be checked before applying it to a fabricated mitered construction.
Drawing Control
The approved drawing defines critical dimensions including diameter, wall thickness, radius, angle, tangent length, end preparation, and overall length.
Quality Records
Available records can include material certificates, dimensional inspection results, weld inspection records, and specified non-destructive examination reports.
Applications
Water Transmission
Used for large-diameter stainless steel piping where a 90° directional change is required and the fitting geometry is defined by the piping layout.
Industrial Process Lines
Applicable to selected water, chemical, and industrial fluid systems where the stainless steel grade is compatible with the service medium.
Equipment Piping
The fabricated configuration is suitable for connections requiring a defined radius, custom face-to-face dimension, or specific pipe orientation.
Specification for Inquiry
Pipe Data
Provide outside diameter or nominal pipe size, wall thickness, connected pipe dimensions, and material grade.
Elbow Geometry
Specify the 90° angle, centerline radius, tangent length, face-to-face dimension, and segment arrangement where defined by the engineering drawing.
Fabrication Requirements
State end preparation, surface finish, welding requirements, applicable material specification, inspection method, and required documentation.
Drawing Reference
A dimensional drawing or sketch should be included when the elbow must match an existing pipe route, equipment nozzle, or installation envelope.
